The first day of 2018. A supermoon was scheduled to rise at 5:22 pm local time. Temp was below freezing and the trails below my house were icy. But at 5:30 pm, I packed up the Pentax K-3 and tripod and headed out into the fading light. Down one trail and up another, until I got to the ridge where I set up the tripod and waited. And waited. And waited. The hills between me and the moon delayed the actual moonrise until about 6:00.

First, the filmy clouds that hovered near the horizon lit up. Then, a small glowing curve began to show. And grow larger. I captured this image just after the moon showed behind the far ridge. I am always surprised by how rapidly the moon (or sun) rises once it breaches the horizon.

The full moon this month is called a Full Wolf Moon. And, we are fortunate to have a blue moon, as another full supermoon will appear AND full lunar eclipse will occur on Jan. 31st - a Blood Supermoon. Weather permitting, I'll be out on the ridge with my camera again.
